Transatlantic cooperation: three CNRS medal winners tell us about their international collaborations
May 2, 2024
Céline Spector has spent several years in the USA – first as a French lecturer at Stanford University, then as a Mellon Visiting Scholar and Lurcy Visiting Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Chicago – as well as short stays inspired by conferences and symposia. During her travels, she forged strong working (and friendly) relationships with her American counterparts, particularly those she met at the University of Chicago.
[…]
On a larger scale, her testimony illustrates the quality of the relationship between the CNRS and the University of Chicago – two institutions whose history of joint work is distinguished by a significant number of multidisciplinary co-publications. The International Research Center Discovery created in 2022 between the CNRS and the University of Chicago represents the culmination of this bilateral cooperation, and is the result of a series of individual collaborations like those undertaken by Céline Spector.

Visite au Marine Biological Laboratory et au Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
January 24, 2024

Researchers building ‘bionic breast’ to restore sensation for cancer survivors
November 7, 2023
About one-third of the 3.5 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. have undergone a mastectomy to remove one or both breasts. Up to 77% of these women report sexual dysfunction following surgery, yet Stacy Tessler Lindau says that few of them are given the opportunity to process the long-term effects of the procedure beyond the immediate goal of removing a tumor.
“For most women, it’s less than a few weeks between the moment a doctor says, ‘You have breast cancer’ and having a mastectomy,” she said. “Even if their breasts are cosmetically restored, women still have many of the same experiences as a person who loses a limb, like feeling it’s no longer part of their body, total loss of sensation and even pain. For many people, it’s not just a physical loss, but also a psychological and even existential loss.”

UChicago, French science agency launch partnership to tackle world problems
June 9, 2023
The University of Chicago and France’s Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique have launched a broad and ambitious partnership to tackle some of the world’s most pressing issues.
The partnership, called the University of Chicago-CNRS International Research Center for Fundamental Scientific Discovery (IRC Discovery), brings together researchers and faculty from across the span of academic disciplines.
The key driver to this collaboration is the recognition that the big issues facing the world cannot be solved by any one person, institution or country.
“There is no problem that we can solve alone,” said Antoine Petit, Chairman and CEO of CNRS during a public event June 6 at the University of Chicago’s Gleacher Center in downtown Chicago. Petit led a delegation from France of more than 20 CNRS leaders and researchers for the June 5-7 launch of IRC Discovery in Chicago. CNRS is the largest fundamental science agency in Europe.
