EU Funding Mechanisms
UChicago and CNRS researchers working in collaboration may be eligible for grants available through EU funding agencies. Past UChicago-CNRS projects supported by EU grants include DAMIC-M, a joint UChicago-CNRS project led by UChicago Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics Paolo Privitera, which was awarded $4 million ERC Advanced Grant in 2017 and “Pioneers of the Sky: Aerial Archaeology and the Black Desert,” an exhibition at UChicago’s Museum of the Institute for the Study of Ancient Culture (ISAC), curated by Marie Skłodowska-Curie post-doctoral fellow Marie-Laure Chambrade and supported by the EU’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program.
Below are just a few of many grants offered through the EU. More information can be found through EURAXESS North America (sign up for their mailing list here).

Horizon Europe
Horizon Europe is the EU’s key funding program for research and innovation, which facilitates collaboration and strengthens impact in developing, supporting and implementing EU policies while tackling global challenges. The Horizon Europe program covers a broad range of efforts including increasing scientific excellence, addressing global challenges and European industrial competitiveness, and building Europe’s innovation ecosystem.
European Research Council (ERC)
The European Research Council, set up by the EU in 2007, is the premiere European funding organization for frontier research. It provides attractive and flexible funding to enable talented and creative individual researchers, with an emphasis on early-stage researchers, and their teams to pursue the most promising avenues at the frontier of science, on the basis of EU-wide competition based solely on the criterion of excellence.
Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions
The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions comprise the European Union’s flagship program for doctoral and postdoctoral training, equipping researchers with new knowledge and skills through mobility across borders and exposure to different sectors and disciplines.
